MicroCART

Project Description

MicroCART project is centered around the development of a quadcopter and tracking system. This project has been in development since 1998 and the current system has been passed down since 2006. The project aims to create a stable and easy-to-use platform for researching control theory and to showcase the skills that a student in the ECpE department can gain throughout their time at Iowa State by creating an impressive demo that the quad can perform. The quadcopter flies primarily in the Distributed Sensing and Decision Making Laboratory within a twelve-camera infrared tracking system.

All of the project progress throughout the semester is recorded on our Iowa State hosted website. Individual contributions and progress will be recorded below on my portfolio

Project Involvement

I hold the role of implementing the OS that will l run on the newly added computing unit. We plan to introduce ROS (Robot Operating System) as the control implementation to allow for a robotics platform. I also work to maintain the Git Repository for the project making sure to maintain a good git structure and provide a documentation git workflow for new teams to work off of.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Hardware Design

    • Implement a board to interface with the FPGA to allow for control of the drone motors and other hardware.

  • Operation Systems

    • Implement ROS onto and FPGA within a Linux Distro
